Abstract:
I studied how rock candy crystals form and how long they take for my science project. Rock candy crystals grow over time. They take about one week to form. I wanted to know if unseeded strings which are just regular strings would make the crystals form faster than the sugar coated strings.
In my procedure first I got 5 regular strings and 5 sugar coated strings and layed them on wax paper till the next day. Then the next day I got all ten strings that were regular and sugar coated strings and tied the ends to screws. Then I got the other ends of the ten strings and tied them to skewers. Then i made the sugar water solution. I poured the the sugar water solution in the the ten jars. After I got the each skewer and taped them to there own jar and waited a week for the rock candy crystals. Plus recorded data of the crystals growing overtime. In my results none of the crystals grew at all. So my hypothesis didnt even work. This is not a project i would recomend for students to try.

Purpose:
This project would be cool and fun. People should care about this type of project because it show you how you can make your own candy crystal. Its a fun project for people to make treats. You can even see how they grow over time. It would be something fun for people to try new things.

History:
Rock candy crystals have been around for a very long time. No one really knows who who discovered candy crystals. I know though that it was used in the 18th century as a therapeutic substance similar to medicine (Dave 1999). That's why it was used to help people's throats sometimes. Candy crystals were used as remedies too. This was a amazing substance that could cure you.
There are many believers who say the crystals work. They have tried to do this. It's mostly the type of quarts that are purple. These type of crystals have epsom salts which that are used in healing. They are a crystalline structure that has chemical impurities(Lang 1999).

Process:
To make rock candy it would have to go to a process called crystallization (Dave 1999). This is when it's breaking apart molecular structures of sugar. Plus rock candy was used to save food too. There were so many uses for rock candy that helped lots of people. Crystals in fact did have healing powers. There have been some people who are believers that crystals did heal the sick. It is sometimes used in cold/cough medicine.

Application:
Rock candy is a very delicious treat that allot of people like to eat. China and India are two countries that depend on their sugar production to keep there their economy afloat (Veronica 1999). I would try to make crystals that would help maybe skin or sicknesses I was looking sum crystals up and there are some crystals that can heal you.

Problem: Does an regular string make crystals more or faster than a sugar coated string ?

Hypothesis: If replacing a sugar coated string with a regular string then the crystal will grow more.

Variables :
Independent:amount of crystals growing
Dependent:the number of days
Control: cups, water solution, strings

Materials: (how much of each?)
  • Yarn or cotton (about 1.5 feet)
  • water
  • 10 cups or jars
