Abstract:
(revise to make this flow better)
This experiment was about holding your breath to see the effect of your heart rate. Apparently your heart rate is suppose to decrease when you hold your breath for a certain amount of time. Scientists say that your heart will slow down over time because there is a dangerous amount of carbon dioxide building up in your lungs (Source?0. I wanted to see if that was true. This lab is simply you just holding your breath for about 30 seconds then checking your heart rate right afterwards. To make it a little more fun you can fill up a bowl, or if you have a pool, you can put your face in the pool and hold your breath and see if the outcome is different then holding your breath on land. What will happen is your heart rate will begin to accelerate the longer you hold your breath. Hold your breath as long as you can don’t push yourself if you can’t do it anymore. After my lab, I found out that my hypothesis was correct; your heart rate does increase when you hold your breath. I noticed that when you hold your breath for a shorter amount of time, your heart rate barely changes.

Purpose: Instead of "you" use "people/they"
Have you ever wondered why you were always so tired when you would hold your breath, and why your heart rate would change every time you do so? (you would actually notice a change in your heart rate? That is what this lab is all about, finding out why your heart beats faster when you hold your breath. Maybe after reading this you will better understand why that happens. You never realize that you do this almost everyday, like when you go swimming or you hold your breath for a little bit because something smells bad, you never actually realize that you are slowly harming your body. This lab was interesting because you do this when you go swimming or when your neighbors are mowing the lawn.

History:

Process: (lacking scientific words for your glossary; find a different source that will give you more information and how oxygen affects the heart rate; also explain what is a heart rate and its harmful to slow it down (sleep apnea))
Breathing is an essentially part of life. We breathe through our nose and our mouths and it goes to our lungs. From our lungs all the nutrients from that air is spread throughout our bodies. When we breathe out, we remove some of the carbon dioxide that was in our bodies. When we hold our breath, we are not allowing the carbon dioxide to leave and it will harm our bodies over time.

APPLICATION:
Because of this(SPECIFY) problem, some athletes, swimmers in particular, have a disadvantage when swimming in competitions. Their disadvantage is that they can't hold their breath as long as the other competitors. Also, if you watch the news, ABC news in particular, then you will see that during the weather segment, under the temperatures, they will tell you if the air is breathable for everyone, or if it won’t be safe for certain people (Source?) . To help people breath better there is a mask called CPAP (What does it stand for?) . You wear it when you sleep to make sure that you can breathe well during your sleep. Even though the problem isn't fully cured, scientists have made it much more tolerable for many athletes with this problem and for people like you.

LAB REPORT
Procedure:
  1. Gather five people to do the experiment with.
  2. Check your resting heart rate. Record this on a piece of paper or a notebook.
  3. Hold your breath for 15 seconds.
  4. Check your heart rate after holding your breath. Record this on a piece of paper or in a notebook.
  5. Hold your breath again, but for 30 seconds.
  6. Check your heart rate once more. Record this on a piece of paper or in your notebook.
  7. (give directions on how to conduct 5 trials)

Reflection:
In the future I don’t think I will do this lab again because it was hard to do it alone. Doing a project alone is really hard especially if you have to write a report, get all the materials, and doing the experiment yourself. Sometimes I would get frustrated with all the work that I would have to do and give up somedays. At the same time I would do It alone because I don’t have to rely on other people to have to do part of the work. The lab was also a little too easy for me, and I wish there was a little more action in the project itself. If I could redo the science fair, I would choose a different topic, and i would work harder then I did now.

This lab wasn't as shocking as i thought it would be, I pretty much knew what would happen already. Holding your breath isn't such a good topic to cover for a science fair project. It's very boring and the outcome is obvious. I hypothesis was correct, i predicted that my heart rate would increase the longer that you hold your breath. Overall, i wouldn't do this lab ever again because it wasn't very exciting.
